Severe weather threatens Athens, NE Ga

Athens and most of northeast Georgia remain under a flash flood watch, with the rain that began falling last night expected to continue for most of the day today: forecasters say the region could see strong thunderstorms later today.

The threat of severe weather leads to the cancellation of the Georgia Women's softball team season opener that had been scheduled for this afternoon in Athens.

- Tornado Watches were expanded to 30 Georgia counties just before 4:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday.

- Currently, there are no storms, but there are heavy downpours across Atlanta this morning.

- Storm risk will be increasing throughout the morning.

- A tornado watch is likely for parts of Georgia this morning.

4:45 a.m.: Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Chattooga, north Floyd County, Gordon County and possibly part of Bartow County.

4:40 a.m.: Tornado Watch extended into Georgia counties including Bibb, Butts, Crawford, Crisp, Dooly, Houston, Monroe, Peach, Fayette, Carroll, Haralson, Chattahoochee, Coweta, Harris, Heard, Lamar, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Muscogee, Pike, Schley, Spalding, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson.
