UGA student shoots, wounds self outside Chemistry Building

A University of Georgia student was injured in what is said to have been an accidental self-inflicted gunshot to the leg. It happened near the UGA chemistry building on Cedar Street. The male student was taken to a hospital in Athens. Police are investigating.

A University of Georgia student was injured Tuesday afternoon from an accidental self-inflicted gunshot to the leg, according to an official statement from the university.

The incident happened in the Chemistry Building Annex at 140 Cedar Street, spokesman Greg Trevor said in the statement to AJC.com.

UGA police responded and found the student alert. Medical personnel took the student to the hospital, according to Trevor.

"There are no factors that indicate any threat to the community related to this incident," Trevor said.

It’s unclear how the incident happened.

Legislation went into effect in 2017 allowing for guns to be carried by individuals with state licensed permits on any campus that’s part of the Georgia public college and university system, AJC.com previously reported.

There are some exceptions to the “campus carry” law. Those include dormitories, fraternity and sorority houses, and buildings used for athletic events. The gun must be concealed.

A group of professors has challenged the law. A decision from the Georgia Court of Appeals if the case can continue is expected in November.
